You know who you are. You’re confident. You believe in yourself. But how do you ensure others sense this? By building the most important brand of all—YOU.
Nowadays, in a competitive job market dominated by social media and digital resumes, it’s important to market yourself in the most accurate and appealing way possible. There are hundreds of platforms creative and marketing professionals can use to accomplish this, but some are more effective than others. While LinkedIn is probably the most discussed, let’s explore two other critical social media sites, along with another tried and true platform.
Twitter is essential to the foundation of your brand. In 140 characters or less, Twitter allows you to creatively express yourself, keep up with colleagues, stay connected to current events, and, not to mention, make new connections. Your tweets should be clear and representative of who you are, what you believe in and what you are doing professionally. Incorporate hashtags to help organize your content. If you need help crafting tweets, think about these questions:
- How can your brand add flare to a company?
- What new discovery have you made?
- How can your brand grow?
- How can you capitalize on your ethics?

Instagram is your brand’s visual identity. Each image or video you Instagram provides further insight into your brand. Since the human eye gravitates towards visually appealing media, you need to carefully consider what you post. You might want to step out of your comfort zone to make a lasting impression and differentiate you brand. You can also cleverly use hashtags and filters. Refrain from posting just to post and don’t post the same image everyone else posts. If you’re stuck on ideas, here are some questions that may trigger a great one:
- What motivates you?
- What made you laugh today?
- What gets you inspired?
- What excites you?
- What challenges you?
Individuals recall images far longer and in greater detail than words. Make your images jump off the screen, while still fitting your brand.
Website or Blog
A personal website or blog is a great, flexible way to give others a taste of your brand. Websites are fun because you have the power to truly make your brand stand out. However you design your site, remember to make it easily digestible and user friendly. Here are some items to potentially include on your site:
- A brief bio that focuses on your education, experience and hobbies
- Details on what you aspire to be professionally
- A portfolio of your work
- Details on what differentiates you from your colleagues
- Fun facts about yourself presented in a creative manner
- Full contact information
The common denominator across these platforms is YOU. Therefore, in the creation and upkeep of each platform, you need to be active and visible. If you’re extra visual, use tools like InDesign, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to capture the essence of your brand. If you’re more of a wordsmith, use creative writing to showcase your brand.
While each of the aforementioned platforms are different from one another and offer their own unique sets of advantages and disadvantages, remember that your brand should be consistent across all channels—from the tone of your voice to the subject matter to the look and feel.
Today, as an ambitious professional, especially one that works in the creative and marketing world, it’s critical that you have a strong online presence—one that helps you build YOUR unique brand in a crowded marketplace.
